Unplug Unused Appliances, Save Electricity

Save money by unplugging appliances when you're not using them.  Even if an appliance isn't on, it might be on standby.  Also, electronics inside appliances use electricity even if they aren't turned on.  When you leave for the day or take a long trip, remember to unplug any televisions or computers.

Here is a short list of appliances that probably use a small amount of electricity when plugged in, even if they aren't being used.

  • Televisions
  • DVD Players and VCRs
  • CD Players and Radios
  • Desktop computers
  • Laptop computers
  • Modems
  • Cable TV boxes
  • Cordless phones
  • Coffeemakers
  • Lamps
  • Toasters with Digital Displays
  • MP3 Players and other electronic gadgets
Unplugging an appliance that isn't being used will become a habit, once you begin to recognize that certain appliances cost you money when they aren't being used.  Just unplug the device the next time you see it in your home.  It is as simple as turning off the lights. You'll be glad when you get a lower electric bill.
